The Second Beast of Revelation 13

E-mail Print PDF

Rev 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

In this article I will be revealing the identity of the second beast. If you have not read my previous article identifying the first beast, please do so now. In my first article I explained the first 12 verses of Revelation 13 where I identified the first beast as “the law of sin.” Our clue as to the identity of these beasts comes from Romans 5 through 8. The first beast is revealed thusly: “For without the law sin was dead,” (this is the beast with his head wounded to death.) “…but when the commandment came, sin revived…” (His deadly wound was healed)…[Rom 7: 8, 9].

Now to reveal the second beast: And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. This beast works in conjunction with the first beast and his name is Death. Sin and death go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other. Wherever there is sin (which is everywhere), there is death. If it were not for sin, death would not exist. The rest of Rev. 13 shows how these two work together to affect the lives of every living creature on earth.

Some people reading this article may think it too technical to hold their interest. However, we need to keep in mind that the truths revealed here that have been hidden in Scripture until the end times when they would be needed, will require some deep exegesis for their secrets to be fully revealed. God kept the interpretation of these scriptures hidden from the church and yet available for a reason. He is going to show us some things about sin and death that could only be known by the church of the end times who will soon to be facing the greatest sin of all time coupled with the most death the world has ever seen, but God has great hope for us all in the book of Revelation. Later on in this book, we will see that these beasts are cast into the lake of fire. While we, the church, face these greatest evils of all time, we will also find ourselves overcoming sin and death in this life.

We will soon face the end of civilization as we have known it. America, the last great bastion of freedom, is soon to lose all her freedom. What hope will there be for the world then? There will be a people, a people who have been hidden away in God for decades, who will come forth triumphant over these two beasts, who will bring great hope, ministry and encouragement to all who will receive them.

I want to point out something very important here. When we read that the beasts are cast into the lake of fire (the second beast is also known as the false prophet), if we are looking at the scripture with an outward interpretation, we will think of it as happening once and for all for all people. However, with our inward interpretation, we can see that this happens individually according to our own maturing into God’s kingdom. When I am ready, God will cast sin and death in me into the lake of fire. Then I, still living on earth but fully realizing my citizenship in heaven, will be able to perform miracles such as Jesus performed. In fact, he promises in John that we will do even greater works than he did because he has gone to be with the Father.

As we saw in my first article, the first beast (the law of sin) rises up out of the sea…the sea being the restless desires of the flesh. This second beast is coming up out of the earth. The earth represents our body because Adam was created from the dust of the earth. Death dwells in the body. Not only is there physical death, but there is also spiritual death for those who are not true believers in Jesus Christ. Jesus overcame death for all who would believe in him. “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage (Heb. 2:14, 15). As we shall soon see, the Devil is also revealed later in this Revelation passage where he is shown as he is related to death.

Jesus overcame death for us all; however, the physical body still dies. We go to heaven in our spiritual body when we die, but our natural body is buried here. Those of us living at this present time, who are facing the end of all things as we have known them, have something greater to look forward to. 1 Cor 15 tells us that there comes a time when “this mortal will put on immortality.” Let’s look at that passage now: For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory (1 Cor 15:53, 54).

This is what we have to look forward to, but only if we are totally sold out and committed to Jesus Christ in every area of our life. This world is going to be completely filled with violence, death and all the evils of the totalitarian rule of the Antichrist. It is falling upon us rapidly. Don’t expect to see some man stand up and identify himself as the ruler of the world before this all happens. It is all happening right now. Just for one example, if you don’t know about the law recently passed by congress known as S510, stop and google it now. It involves total control of our food supply by global organizations making it a crime to even own seed or have a little vegetable stand where you sell garden produce to your neighbors. Some are saying it will even be against the law to have a vegetable garden in your own backyard. There is only one reason for this law…and they’re not going to tell us what it is. Those individuals who are controlling governments behind the scenes want us all dead. The quickest and easiest way to do it is to let us all starve to death. They can also fill our food with poisons to make us weak and sickly. This is also going on now.

There are laws being passed and implemented that will make it against the law to possess any food that is not regulated by the government. All the things that poison our food will be required by law to be used by food growers…pesticides, hormones, genetically manipulated organisms, irradiation, and slaughter house feed for animals. They are using widespread news stories about outbreaks of salmonella, e-coli, etc. to frighten everyone into receiving their laws when they implement them. Who are the “they” that are doing all this? The mega drug companies who lobby governments and use big money to push their way around. Often the congressmen voting for these measures don’t really understand the ramifications of their actions.

What can we do about this? Can we get our congressmen to make changes that will help us? Can we depend on our government to make things right and fair? Absolutely not! All we can do is press into the kingdom of God. That is our only hope. We must draw close to Jesus, pursue him until we become like him and then we will enter into his kingdom even as we live on this earth. I have revealed many details about how this will happen in my book The Four Living Creatures available on this site. I can’t describe this now because it needs to be seen as it is presented in Scripture, otherwise it would sound like my own opinion or mere conjecture. The Four Living Creatures takes every verse of Ezekiel 1 and shows precisely how God will be working in us to bring us into a higher heavenly realm.

So…getting back to our scripture, we see that this second beast is death. The last half of Rev 13:11 confirms this because he has “two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon.” Two…(as stated in my previous article, numbers are to be interpreted according to their spiritual meaning rather than denoting how many)…two has more than one spiritual meaning, one of them being “ruin and desolation,” (see E.W. Bullinger Number in Scripture). Horns are representative of power. Therefore, “two horns” means he has destructive power. “Like a lamb” also refers to death because lambs are symbolic of death in Scripture (Isa 53:7, Gen 22:8).

This second beast “spake as a dragon.” Satan is identified as the dragon in Rev. 20:2. How does the Devil speak? With lies. The Devil is described as one who was a liar from the beginning. So we see that death lies. And what is his basic lie?...that life ends with physical death. When you’re dead, you’re dead. There is no life after death. People who believe this lie are not happy people because they have no hope. The glorious message Jesus has for our lost and dying world is eternal life. The Christian will not die ultimately because at physical death, he/she goes to be with Jesus in their spiritual body. The physical part will be administered at the end when we receive our glorified bodies.

To sum up my interpretation of And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon: I was made aware of death rising up from the physical body with great destructive power. This destructive power of death had sent forth a false message that there is no life after physical death.

As we continue on with our study of Revelation 13, I will be able to show how all these verses flow together to demonstrate how sin and death work together in the Devil’s efforts to destroy humanity and all of God’s creation.

Rev 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

Here we see that the second beast, death, has all the power of the first beast, sin. This is clearly seen in Romans 5:12: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Let’s look at that in NLT:
When Adam sinned, death entered the entire human race. (This is the power of the first beast.) Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone. (This is the power of the second beast who “exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him.”) They have the same power in that both of them have spread to all humanity. However, death could not have done this on its own. There had to be sin first before there could be death.

The next part of Rev. 13:12 states that the second beast causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. According to my interpretation, death (the second beast) causes us to bow down to sin (the first beast). The Bible states that the fear of death has kept us all in bondage (Heb. 2:15). Fear of death holds us in bondage to sin because fear in itself is sin. Fear of death can lead us to succumb to the lusts of the flesh…lusting for food, sex, etc. which are things necessary to keep us from death.

Moving right along, let’s look at the next verse, Rev 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

There are many places in Scripture where fire has fallen from heaven. Fire fell from heaven upon the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah killing everyone.  When Ahaziah sent companies of 50 men each after Elijah, Elijah called fire down from heaven that destroyed all the men in each company (except the last one). Fire fell from heaven and consumed Job’s servants and his sheep. In short, when fire falls from heaven, people and animals die. Fire falling from heaven is God’s judgment on sin, so this lines up perfectly with my interpretation that the second beast is death. The judgment of God on sin is death (Rom 6:23).

The first clause of this verse says, he doeth great wonders. This word “wonders,” semeion in Greek, can be translated as “a sign, a mark, or a token.” The sign, mark or token of death comes to us all with wrinkles, gray hair, weakness of body, accidents and sickness. All these things are seen by humans everywhere (in the sight of men) as signs (wonders) that we all eventually die.

Now to uncover the mystery of the image…Rev 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Here we see that death tells us to make an image to sin. An image is a likeness. We have all made an image to sin in that we have all formed a carnal mind to a certain extent. The image to the beast is actually the carnal mind, and the carnal mind is focused on sin. Sin is what enables death to exist. So, of course, death wants us all to have a carnal mind,  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be (Rom 8:6, 7).

The Bible makes very clear to us what the carnal mind is like. Out of the carnal mind come forth all the following sins: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin (Gal 5:19-21 NLT). The next verse in Revelation reveals more about the carnal mind.

Rev 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Here we see that death (the second beast) gives life to the carnal mind (the image of the first beast which is sin). In Deuteronomy Moses encouraged the people to follow God when he said, Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call upon heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants might live! Choose to love the Lord your God and to obey him and commit yourself to him, for he is your life. Then you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (Deut 30:19, 20 NLT).

We are surrounded with things that represent life or death, and daily we make decisions regarding which things we will allow into our life. Certain things that represent death feed our carnal mind thereby giving it life that actually results in our death. Other things feed our spiritual mind and bring us life. We must choose.

The things that I speak will come forth from my carnal mind (the image of the beast speaks) if that is what I have been giving power to via my decisions. However, if I decide I am not going to bow down to my carnal mind, if I refuse to do and say what it is trying to lead me to do or say, I will die to self (and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.)

People all over the world, even Christians, are right now bowing down to the image of the beast and don’t even know they are doing it. When we live according to the dictates of our carnal mind, we are submitting to sin…we are bowing to the image of the beast. The Church has been very weak and ineffectual in the western world today because of this very thing. Christians are involved in just as much carnal behavior as the rest of the society to the point it is impossible to determine any difference between the Christians and the non-Christians. For this reason, we should not be surprised by the devastation that comes upon us as we progress further into these end times. God is going to judge his church first and it is not going to be pretty! We have been granted more grace and more opportunities to follow God than any people who have ever lived, and yet we have squandered it all on our pursuit of pleasure and materialism. However, God does have a remnant who has not bowed to this evil image. They can expect to enter into his kingdom and find great peace and safety in the midst of the turmoil and death that will engulf our nation and the whole world.

And now we will finish this chapter as we look at the meaning of the mark of the beast:

Rev 13:16, 17 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Are we going to be forced to take a literal mark on our forehead or hand? I don’t know for certain, but I think people are receiving the mark even now and don’t even know it. The enemy of our souls is very subtle. He works his way into our lives without our even knowing it because our spiritual senses have become dulled by our participation in worldly things. We are marked spiritually by our thoughts (head) and actions (hand). I believe that we are all even now marked according to how we have been living. We either have the mark of the beast or the mark of God upon us.

There was another kind of mark on someone’s forehead in the Old Testament. Aaron wore a gold plate upon his forehead that had “Holiness to the Lord” engraved on it. He had this on his forehead when he entered the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle where God dwelt. If we are to enter into the presence of the Lord in these end times, we must have holiness of mind and purity of heart, but we won’t have a literal gold plate on our forehead.

In Ezekiel 9, there is an account of people who were righteous receiving a mark on their foreheads that protected them from death while those without the mark were slain in God’s judgment. I suspect that this mark indicates a spiritual condition rather than an outward physical sign that can be seen with the natural eye.

What does the mark of the beast have to do with buying and selling if it is something spiritual? Simply this: Our world is becoming so corrupt that in order to hold down a job, many Christians are being challenged to either violate their conscience or be insubordinate toward their employer. Insubordination will result in the loss of a job. With no income, one has no money to buy anything.

Here are a few examples of how this works:

  • A used car salesman is told by his employer that he is to lie to potential customers regarding the condition of the used car they are considering buying.
  • A young man with a high paying job in a major drug company learns that his company is involved in many practices that are unethical and have resulted in damage to the lives of other people. The company refuses to change its policies.
  • A doctor is told he must perform abortions or lose his job.
  • A nurse is told that she must be inoculated with a certain vaccine that she deems harmful to her body. If she refuses the vaccine, she loses her job.
  • A college student is required to read certain books of an evil nature in order to pass a required course. To read these books he must violate his conscience and disobey God. If he refuses to read them, he cannot complete his education.
  • I was told by my denomination that I was not to teach some things posted on this web site and written in my books because they did not line up with official church doctrine regarding the second coming of Christ. I submitted to this because it did not violate my conscience, but there came a time when God brought us out of the denomination. Now I am free to speak the truth as I know it; however, any job security we had with that organization is now gone and we had to leave our home (parsonage) because it was owned by the denomination.

So we see that the mark of the beast is not necessarily a literal mark, but it has everything to do with whether or not we are will tolerate within ourselves a carnal mind or live according to its dictates. If we are to live lives of holiness before the Lord, we may have to forfeit our job. Then we can neither buy nor sell.

And now for the number 666:

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

“Six” is the number of man in opposition to God. “Three” is the number of completeness, so in “666” we have the completeness of man in opposition to God. In other words, it represents the greatest evil ever known in all of history. That is what is going to come forth in these end times…evil such as humankind as never before seen. It will come forth out of the carnal mind of humankind empowered by the Devil that will result in tremendous death and destruction on a scale never before known. Now that we are a “global community” things that used to happen in isolated places will now occur all over the world as the Antichrist begins to establish his rule over the world. Economic collapse in one country will affect the economies of many nations. At some point it will all fall.

There will be no place on earth where the Antichrist’s influence will not be experienced. There is no place left on earth where anyone will be able to hide from him. We are all under the surveillance cameras of satellites in space. You can “google” your phone number or address and immediately come up with a picture of your house and even your car parked in your driveway all from outer space.

So where can we go? What can we do? We can enter the kingdom of God. That is the only place left to go. We must be free from the influence of our carnal mind in order to go there. When we refuse the mark of the beast, meaning when we refuse to live according to the dictates of our carnal mind and allow God to put it to death via the cross, we will be on our way into the kingdom.

Revealing the Beasts of Revelation 13

E-mail Print PDF
Revelation Chapter 13 is one of the most fascinating chapters in the book of Revelation. In it we find the following: (1) the beast with seven heads and ten horns, (2) the beast with two horns like a lamb, (3) the image of the beast, and (4) 666, the mark of the beast. God has given me a fascinating revelation of what these all mean and how they fit together. I would like to share this revelation with my readers, but first I will need to lay some groundwork.

The safest way to interpret Scripture is with Scripture. I will do this by drawing mostly from Romans chapters 5 through 8. I will not be giving my opinion here but will be showing how God has made a picture for us in Rev. 13 of the truths stated in Romans 5 through 8. There have been many interesting theories of what these beasts, the image and the mark all mean. I don’t intend to say that I have the only interpretation, but I believe the one I have truly has been revealed to me by God through many hours of Bible study and prayer.

Along with using Scripture to interpret Scripture, I will be using a perspective that not many today have understood but that was widely used by the early Church Fathers. This perspective involves viewing this passage as something inward rather than outward. Rather than there being a literal beast rising up out of the literal sea, or perhaps nations and governments as others have conjectured, we will see that this beast represents something inside all of us. When Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within you,” he revealed a great key for us to use in understanding the deeper levels of Scripture. This is not to say there cannot be an outward interpretation for Scripture, but I am using an inward one for the truths being presented here. All that we see in the systems of this world have sprung up out of what is inside of humankind. So we see that what is inside is the most important.

With these two principles in mind, let us turn now to the first three verses of Revelation 13:

Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Rev 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

The third verse in this passage holds the key to the identity of this beast…the head that was wounded unto death and then healed. Is there someone or something in the Bible (other than Jesus) that was dead and then was made alive? Yes, there is! Before we get to that, though, we need to understand that everything in this Revelation chapter is symbolic. This beast does not literally have seven heads. In deeply symbolic scriptural passages, numbers are to be interpreted spiritually rather than numerically. “Seven” has more than one spiritual meaning. It can mean “spiritual perfection and completion” and it can mean “to swear an oath” or quite literally “to seven oneself.”

Here are the scriptures that identify this beast:
Paul said in Romans 7, “For without the law sin was dead.” (This is the beast with his head wounded to death.) “…but when the commandment came, sin revived…” (His deadly wound was healed.)

These two verses from Romans show us just who this beast is…the law of sin. This is speaking of the curse of original sin that all of us were born with. We all have the tendency to choose sin. Jesus Christ, through his death and resurrection, gave us the power to resist this tendency, but it is still within us. We overcome it through our own death to self and the inward resurrection life we experience as we do so. However, that thing is still within us. Truly it is a beast and has been responsible for all the wars and suffering experienced by all humankind down through the ages. No one has been able to escape this inward tendency. The only one born without it was Jesus Christ who was conceived, not with the seed of Adam, but by the Holy Spirit. And yet even without the law of sin operating within, the Bible tells us he was still subject to temptations but never gave in to them.

The Scripture states “one of his heads,” however, the word “one” also means “first.” “Heads” also means in the Greek “in the sense of seizing; the part most readily taken hold of.” We know that sin doesn’t literally have heads, however we know that the first thing we notice about it when we become aware of it is that it has seized us. It has seized everyone.

John, the writer of Revelation, states that he was standing on the sand of the sea when he saw this beast. Not everyone is able to see the beast. Paul didn’t see it until the law came and he realized what sin was and how it had seized his own life. The “sea” symbolically represents the “restless desires of the flesh.” A Christian who wants to love and serve God becomes aware at some point that what he wants to do and what he actually does are two different things. Paul states this in Romans 7:19-23:

Rom 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Rom 7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Rom 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
Rom 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

This is the Christian dilemma that all sincere Christians face in life. There is something in us that seems out of our control. This is the law of sin that operates in us and seems to have its own life apart from ours. It dwells in the restless desires of our flesh, and we have to stand against this beast. Only by our union with Jesus Christ are we able to keep it under control.

I find this understanding to be very helpful. When I want to do something God has told me not to do, I think about my desire as being from the beast and not from my own self. This helps me say no to it.

Let’s continue on with our scriptural passage and see what more we can learn about this great enemy within. John saw that it had “ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns.” In Scripture, horns represent power and crowns speak of authority and rule. The number ten means “completeness of order.” This shows us that this law of sin does have power and it does influence the hearts and minds of all persons on earth and every living creature. It is so complete that nothing escapes it.

This knowledge helps us know that we can “hate the sin” and “love the sinner.” I recently read a book entitled Tortured for Christ about Christians who are imprisoned and tortured in communist countries because of their belief in Christ. These Christians love and pray for those who torture them even though their captors have been responsible for ruining the lives of both them and their families. Because of this love, many of their captors have become Christians. These Christians are able to separate the person torturing them from the beast within that drives them to do it. Only in Jesus Christ is this kind of love possible!

The scripture further defines this beast as the law of sin when it says that “upon his heads” he had “the name of blasphemy.” Certainly sin blasphemes God. It stands totally against all of Scripture and everything God is and desires for us to be.

The second verse in this passage will show us more about this law of sin:
Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

How is the law of sin like a leopard? We go to the Scriptures and find that in Jeremiah we are told that a leopard cannot change its spots. “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?” We cannot change the law of sin within us. It is there and although we can resist it through Jesus, we cannot make it better or make it go away. So the law of sin is like a leopard because we cannot change it.

“His feet are as the feet of a bear.” The definition of the Greek word for “bear” is, “a bear as obstructing by ferocity.” The law of sin does not have heads as I said earlier, and it does not have feet. However, it lives in humans, and we have feet. Our feet speak of our walk through life. Our walk in life is obstructed by this law of sin within us. It keeps us from doing what we want to do and makes us do what we don’t want to do. As Paul said, “I find a law then, that when I would do good, evil is present with me” (Rom. 7:21).  Sin definitely obstructs our lives.

“His mouth was as the mouth of a lion.” The only mouth the law of sin has is the one we give it. We can say words that tear other people apart even as a lion tears apart his prey with his powerful jaws. A powerful ruler can speak words with his mouth and send millions of people to their death (as Hitler, Stalin, Mao and other wicked rulers have done). We Christians want to speak words of peace and love, but sometimes we say things that cause great hurt to others around us. When we pray and seek to become more like Jesus, he helps us overcome this tendency.

The next thing verse 2 tells us about this beast is that the dragon gives him his power and authority. The dragon is the Devil as stated in Rev 20:2, “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.” The power behind the sin nature is the Devil. We Christians have great reason for rejoicing, though, because Jesus Christ has overcome the Devil and in him we also can overcome.

At this point I have interpreted the first three verses of Revelation 13 with the exception of the last clause of verse three which states, “and all the world wondered after the beast.” Thayers Greek Lexicon says “wondered” can mean “influenced.” The entire world is influenced by the beast. There is nothing alive on earth that is not in some way influenced by sin. The next verse tells us more about this.

Rev 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

True believers in Jesus Christ can be influenced by sin but they don’t worship it. However, the rest of the world does, and there are many who actually do worship the Devil. When they meet in their satanic rituals, they sin in every way conceivable. They do all they can to let the beast manifest himself in and through them by fornicating, murdering, abusing children and breaking every biblical injunction they possibly can.

To worship, proskuneo in Greek, means “to fawn or crouch to or prostrate oneself in homage.” People bow to kings and world rulers and become their servants. Spiritually if we give in to sin, we become its servant. Rom 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” We are all someone’s servant. If we serve sin, we are under bondage to it. If we serve Jesus Christ, we find freedom and well being from being his servant.

To ask, “Who is like the beast” is to say “Who is really sinful?” One big lie of the Devil that has been swallowed by our society in America says, “Human beings are basically good. If we educate them and make them comfortable by meeting their needs then there will be no more crime. We will have utopia on earth. People aren’t really sinful. Deep down inside everyone is naturally good.

We find the truth in the Bible where we read that the nature of man is basically evil. Of course, it takes a little humility to accept this about ourselves but anyone with eyes to see knows this is true. Even little children display this truth. That’s why children say and do such hurtful things to each other. We see it in the animal kingdom. Set a bowl of food in front of a dog and he starts to eat. Set another bowl just like it beside him for another dog, and he’ll leave his own bowl to eat the other dog’s food. They might even get into a fight over it even though there is plenty for both.

This false belief that man is basically good leads to the rejection of the Ten Commandments and all other biblical injunctions. People think they can decide what is good and what is evil based on their circumstances and their society. This lie is so widely accepted in our world today, even by so called Christians who attend church regularly, that they believe it is okay for unmarried couples to live together because “everyone is doing it so it must be okay.”

The next question by those who worship the beast is, “Who is able to make war with him?” In other words, “Who is able to stand against the sin nature?” Those who are not sincere Christians fall away from the battle against their own sin nature by saying, “Well, that’s just the way I am. I’ve always been this way and I can’t change. Get used to my anger. Accept my bad moods because this is just the way I am.”

Moving ahead to the next verse:

Rev 13:5,6 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Human beings give the law of sin a mouth. It is out of our mouths that great boasts and blasphemies against God are articulated. Sincere Christians would not purposely speak against God, but others are likely to do so. Blasphemy goes beyond cursing and saying actual words against God. What about all the movies and TV shows aired 24/7 that present the message that God does not exist, there are no consequences for sin, fowl language is acceptable and people can have sex anytime they want with whomever and there are no bad repercussions? Christians are usually presented as inferior, bungling people and when the drama turns out alright it is never because someone prayed. All of life appears to work well without God.

We all know the law of sin has been in operation far longer than 42 months. When dealing with a scriptural passage that is so symbolic, numbers are not to be interpreted literally. “Months” just indicate a period of time. The number “42” is the number of the Antichrist. This blasphemy against God has been going on since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. Antichrist is not just one person. It is more than that. It is a spirit that has been present since original sin. The word “Antichrist” only appears four times in Scripture…three in 1st John and one in 2nd John. The last days are to be marked by a great and obvious manifestation of this Antichrist spirit.

The Devil spoke the first blasphemous words when he said to Eve after she told him they were not allowed to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, “Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” I like what the NLT says here, “You won’t die!” the serpent hissed. “God knows that your eyes will be opened when you eat it. You will become just like God, knowing everything, both good and evil.”

The Devil was speaking against God and accusing him of having evil motives for the command he gave Adam and Eve. God gave the command out of love to protect them. That was the first blasphemy against God and it has been going on ever since.

Rev 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

I used to feel fearful when reading this verse. The idea that the beast would make war with me and overcome me didn’t seem consistent with the promises of God as I understood them. However, knowing that the beast is the law of sin sets me free from this apprehension.

The law of sin does make war against the minds and hearts of those of us who love and seek God…and we don’t win every battle. Sometimes we are overcome by it because it is impossible to be completely free from its influence. However, the Lord is with us. He forgives us and his grace sees us through. He has given us power in that when we pray and stand against it, we do have power over it with God’s help. However, the rest of the world, all those who do not love and serve Jesus, are under its power.

Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

God has designed all human beings with the need to worship something. We are worshippers by nature. If we are not worshiping the One True God, we are worshiping some false god…but make no mistake about it, we all worship something. Because of our fallen nature, we find that sin is enjoyable. Overindulging in sweets and unhealthy, fattening foods is enjoyable. Some find that sex whenever and with whomever one desires is enjoyable. Casting off all restraints and being our own boss is enjoyable. However, all these things cause us to become enslaved to sin and the Devil who is the power behind it.

Some people worship demons as they submit to false religions designed by the Devil to keep them enslaved to him. In the Bible we read how they went up into the hills and bowed to Asherah poles and other altars erected to demons. Today people are more sophisticated in that they build fancy buildings and shrines in which to worship their false gods. Some worship their money, their family or even themselves. God’s word here is very true and not to be taken lightly…everyone is a worshipper. If we are not worshipping the One True God, the Lord Jesus Christ, then we are worshipping the beast.

Rev 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

Only those who have spiritual ears, ears that have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit, will understand what is being revealed to us here in the Scriptures. Hearing in the Bible always includes obeying. If we are truly spiritual people, we will understand and obey what the Holy Spirit is teaching us.

Rev 13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

Here is a wonderful promise to God’s faithful. This law of sin that has taken all humanity captive, along with all living creatures, will himself be taken captive. There will come a day when God will say, “Enough!” and the sin nature will be destroyed. We won’t always have to contend with it. This is a promise for those of us living in the end times who are committed to go all the way with God into his fullness. As we press into God, there will come a time when this sin nature in us will be annihilated by God. God will do the work but our cooperation is required. We must love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and our neighbor as our self. We must develop a deep and abiding relationship with God and walk in obedience, purity and righteousness. As we do so, there will be a door opening before us that no other human being has been allowed to enter. We know that God took Enoch because he pleased him. We know that Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. These are exciting historical accounts. However, there is something laid up for the saints of the end times that will be greater than any human being has been allowed to experience. I encourage my readers to search the Scriptures prayerfully and diligently to see what the Holy Spirit wants to reveal to those who are diligently seeking him.

I hope by now you are convinced that this first beast is indeed the law of sin. All the verses related to him in this passage fit together to support this interpretation. When I write about the second beast in my next article, you will see that this also supports my interpretation of the law of sin as being the first beast. The second beast works with the law of sin. I encourage you to read Romans 5 – 8 and find out for yourself just who the second beast is. Don’t be afraid to dig into this difficult passage using the keys I have supplied here and see what you can find in the rest of this chapter. You will be greatly rewarded.

The Vision

Pastor Bob and his wife were just finishing up at the church for the day when one of their new converts, a young woman named Sue Anne, knocked on the office door. She seemed excited and said that God had told her to come to the church and ask Bob to pray for her with the laying on of hands.

As the young pastor and his wife prayed for Sue Anne, she suddenly dropped to the floor under the power of the Holy Spirit. It was obvious from things she would mutter and the movement of her eyes that she was having a great vision. The pastor’s wife quickly set up a tape recorder to ensure that no details of Sue Anne’s account would be forgotten. The following is what was recorded that day in 1971. Surely the time for these events is very near.

Sue Anne: Please pray for me again; I want to go back to where  I was.

Bob: No, you cannot go back. The Lord won’t let you go back.

Sue Anne: Please, Bob, I want to go back to where I was.

Bob: No, you can’t go back. What did you see?

Sue Anne: I was there in the end times, but I wasn’t the only one there. There were other people there…people I know. The earth was brown. Everything was brown. The sky was brown. The trees were brown. They looked like they were burnt but they hadn’t really burned. I don’t understand. The air was dirty and it was real thick. It was hard to breathe. Demons were everywhere—funny looking little things. You could see them. They were hanging onto the buildings and onto the people. We were white. We were absolutely perfect. We didn’t look old. We looked just like we do now only we were perfect. The people would look at us and burn up. It seemed so cruel.  I saw heaven and God was in heaven. I went through three rooms and God was in the third room. It must have been like the tabernacle. I’ve never seen one but that’s what it must have been.

Bob: What did God look like?

Sue Anne: (Long pause while groping for words.) He looks like love. God looks like love. God wasn’t alone. There were other people in the room with him but they didn’t look like us. I don’t know how to describe it but they had this round shape.

Bob: It must have been their spiritual bodies.

Sue Anne: God said to tell you that these people who were perfect were going to have more power than the world has ever seen.

Next in the vision she was shown hell which was a terrifying experience causing her to cry. She said there were a tremendous number of people in hell. There were so many who were not going to go to heaven. She said those who do go to heaven were a great minority. (I was unable to transcribe this part about hell because of damage to the tape rendering it unintelligible.)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Pastor Bob was my brother. I heard the tape shortly after it was recorded and transcribed it as seen here. I include it here because it is an illustration of many things that will be revealed in our study of the four living creatures.

If you are interested in God's plans for his people in the end times, this book is for you. If you would like to be one of the people Sue Anne saw who was absolutely perfect and had more power than the world has ever seen, this book is for you. However, I want to add this caveat, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” If you are not willing to allow your life to be crucified with Christ, if you are not willing to give up all worldly desires at the direction of the Holy Spirit, then you will never come to this place in God. Conversely, if you are totally in love with Jesus and willing to forsake all for him, then he will bring you into a great and mighty ministry such as the world has never seen.

Revelation One

E-mail Print PDF

February 1, 2010

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

The book of Revelation is about the progressive and immediate unveiling of the otherwise unknown and unknowable God--the Lord Jesus Christ. This Revelation was given to John, a person who is representative of persons in the end times who will experience all the things depicted in this mysterious book. Believers in all ages since Christ's first coming have experienced some of the things described here, that is why it says "things that must shortly come to pass," but only those who are living in the time of the end, which is now, will enter fully into these things.

How do we know this is the time of the end? The fact that the true interpretation was hidden until now indicates that we are the ones who need this understanding. The Church of ages past could not understand the Revelation because they could not enter into it. We must live the Revelation if we are to survive what is coming upon this earth.

Destruction of a magnitude never before known to humankind is even now at the threshold and will soon engulf all of us in a struggle for survival. The threats that face our civilization and the world are myriad and any one of them could wipe out multitudes of people.

We have lived with the threat of nuclear war for at least a generation. I remember in grade school in the '50s when the air raid siren sounded and all the classrooms emptied into the hallways where we were instructed to get on our knees, faces towards the floor, with our hands covering our heads. The threat of nuclear war is now an even greater probability because of all the nations who now have nuclear capability plus the possibility of terrorists detonating dirty bombs in our cities.

I could fill the pages of this book with possible scenarios of the end of life as we know it, but that is not my purpose. My purpose is to give hope and encouragement to every Christian who reads this book. No matter how bad things get in this world, God has prepared a place of safety for his people. As the world changes, we must change…not to be conformed to the world but to enter God's kingdom even while we are on earth. The world will no longer be able to sustain life as we have known it. We cannot change this. The sins and mistakes of the past have placed our world on a collision course with disaster and apart from God, no one can stop it. The only place to go is into the Kingdom of God. Jesus showed us the way. The only difference is we don't have to die on a cross in our physical body; Jesus already did that for us. We must die in another way…die to self. As we do so, Jesus will guide us each step of the way into his kingdom. Revelation will show us this process in detail.

What is life in the kingdom like? Jesus showed us glimpses of it, and Scripture is full of kingdom snippets woven symbolically in its history, wisdom, prophecies, etc. (See my book on the Four Living Creatures). Jesus was fully in the kingdom when he appeared to his disciples between the time of his crucifixion and his ascension. He had a body that could appear and disappear. He could eat and his body could be touched. People could see him and hear him speak. He could be in one place and then disappear and be somewhere else. God wants to give us bodies like the one Jesus had…glorified bodies. Revelation shows us how this will be accomplished.

This first verse of Revelation says that God is revealing this to his servants. Not everyone will be able to understand Revelation much less enter into it. Only his servants will be able to grasp the symbolism and principles laid down here. A servant, doulos in Greek, is defined as "one who was in a permanent relation of servitude to another; whose will was completely subject to the will of another. He was a doulos apart from any service he rendered at any given moment. The focus is on relationship, not the service." A servant of the Lord Jesus Christ is one who has chosen to enter into a deep, abiding relationship with him to such an extent that he is able to say, even as Jesus said, "Not my will, but thy will be done."

We are told that he sent and signified this message by his angel. The basic definition in Hebrew or Greek of an angel is "a messenger" A messenger can be a king, a pastor, an ambassador, or some other person who delivers a message. In some places in Old Testament Scripture, an angel is obviously Jesus. Angels have a very important role in Revelation. We will see that word often, and it may mean different things according to the context in which it is used.

This message was "signified." "Signified" has one definition in Webster that states, "something material or external that stands for or signifies something spiritual." All through Revelation we will see words that on the surface express something material or outward, but will actually express an inward spiritual message.

The following is my interpretation of Revelation 1:1:

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

This book depicts the progressive and immediate unveiling of the otherwise unknown and unknowable God--the Lord Jesus Christ, which God gave to Jesus to show to those who are in a permanent relationship of complete subjugation of their will unto the will of Jesus Christ, the things which must shortly come to pass. He sent this in the form of signs that must be interpreted by the aid of the Holy Spirit. This message was given to one who represents Christians living in the end times who will actually live the Revelation.

The Book of Revelation Opens

E-mail Print PDF

November 1, 2009

The book of Revelation is beginning to open to us as never before as our nation begins its descent into the darkest days of its existence. This February in Copenhagen, our president is expected to sign a UN treaty that will basically wipe out our Constitution and plunge us into the loss of all things we as Americans hold dear. You can see more about this at the following:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMe5dOgbu40

I don't believe there is anything we can do to stop this. God is allowing this because of the moral decline of the church and our nation. However, God is going to draw very close to his faithful ones who have refused to compromise with the world and who have been willing to seek him with all their heart.
